EXPOSURE TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS

According to OSHA, "An exposure incident is a specific eye, mouth, other mucous membrane, non-intact skin, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM), as defined in the standard that results from the performance of a worker’s duties." If you find yourself exposed to bloodborne pathogens, it is important that you take the appropriate steps.

EXPOSURE INCIDENT STEPS

• Immediately decontaminate yourself. Flush the affected area with clean water.

• Report the incident to your workplace as soon as possible.

• Get a medical evaluation immediately following exposure.

Your employer must provide you with access to a free medical evaluation if you are exposed.  Fill out any incident report forms after receiving a medical evaluation, so that there is no delay in receiving treatment. Make sure that any incident is reported immediately. This will prevent further spread of the pathogen to other individuals.
